Guest Review: Oracles of Delphi Keep

Summary: Ian Wigby is about to find out that he is a very special boy.

Along the southern coast of England, atop the White Cliffs of Dover, stands a castle. And at that castle’s old keep is an orphanage. Delphi Keep has seen many youngsters come and go through its gates, and Ian Wigby and his sister, Theodosia, are happy to call it home. Life has always been simple at the Keep, and the orphanage safe, until one day, Ian and Theo find a silver treasure box. And within the box, a prophesy. Three thousand years ago a great Greek oracle wrote of a quest. A quest on which the fate of the world depends. A quest that names two children—Ian and Theodosia. Suddenly Delphi Keep is no longer safe. And Ian and Theo, along with a very special group of friends, realize they must unravel the meaning behind the scroll of Dover cavern before darkness falls on the world. And before an unfathomable evil catches up with them. -- Delacorte Press

Lately I have been receiving so many terrific middle-grade books, and I just can't seem to keep up. I thought ORACLES OF DELPHI KEEP by Victoria Laurie looked awesome -- it's already the winner 2009 Kid's Indie Next List "Inspired Recommendations for Kids from Indie Booksellers" -- but I knew I didn't have to time to read a 550+ page book right now. I passed it along to a family friend (aka "Booking Friend") who is entering the sixth grade boy in the fall. He is an avid reader and enjoys fantasy books.
Here are his thoughts:

I really enjoyed the book ORACLES OF DELPHI KEEP by Victoria Laurie. It was very good from the beginning to the end. It kept me wanting to read it and not stop. This book is full of Greek mythology references and lots of action, keeping you on your toes. The characters were well developed! It felt like after a few pages- I knew them. The author's writing is so creative and magical that it pulls you right into the book. The book is also full of mystery. So, if you like Greek mythology, action, and mystery this book is definitely for you. The way the author ends this book, it sounds like there's going to be a follow up book and I can't wait to get my hands on it! This was a great book - cover to cover!

A big thanks to
the publisher for sending me a copy of this book and to Booking Friend for reviewing it!
