A Very Proud Mama

If you follow my blog at all, you know that I'm not the only one in the family who loves to read and talk about books. My 10 year old daughter (aka Booking Daughter) is also a huge book lover. She recently started the 5th grade and came home the other day talking about her "reading goals" for the year. As her mother, I was so excited. How cool is it that a teacher has her 10 year old students setting reading goals?

Well, tonight she brought home a laminated bookmark outlining her goals. She not only wrote out her goals, but she also decorated the bookmark with stickers -- another very cool idea from her teacher I might add! Even though she is already a terrific reader, she really stretched herself on some of the goals. I am so proud of her and wanted to share them with you:

1) Read for 30 minutes, 6 nights a week.

2) Finish 5 books each month.

3) Read the first Harry Potter book. (This is a biggie because she has been fighting me about these books for a few years.)

4) Read a book that is over 500 pages.

  1. Why has she been fighting you about the Harry books? I mean she can knock out the last 2 with a Harry Potter book. :)

  11. That is a great idea. Love the bookmark, too - what a fun way to keep the goals right in front of the kids' faces!

My son's in 5th grade, too, and is FINALLY really getting into books. He's still into thin chapter books - I WISH I could get him to read HP!

  13. This is so cool on a number of different levels. The first is that her goals are pretty lofty for a ten year old! The fact that she is challenging herself is amazing. It is a skill that will not only help her with reading, but will help her in anything that she pursues. I can see why you are so proud :)
