Wondrous Words Wednesday - October 21, 2009

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Kathy aka Bermuda Onion where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. Feel free to join in the fun.

HUMMINGBIRDS by Joshua Gaylord

adumbrated - "How are things? Between you two?"

She shrugs. "Elliptical. How about the tow of you?

"Adumbrated" (p. 248)

adumbrated: to darken or conceal partially; overshadow

palimpsest - Settling back in the seat, she sets her head on a tilt and focuses her attention on the blackboard, where to all appearances she is reading the invisible palimpsest of all the classes ever taught in this room. (p. 252)

palimpsest: a parchment or the like from which writing has been partially or completely erased to make room for another text.

THE QUEEN'S MISTAKE by Diane Haeger

oriel - Her voice shook as she spoke, and she gazed in terror through the small oriel window down onto the green. (p. 3)
oriel: (in medieval architecture) a large bay window of a hall or chamber.

  1. Those are interesting. I knew Oriel but not the other two. Great meme and Kathy has come up with a super new button for it.

Have a good week and happy reading!

  2. I've looked palimpsest up before, but I couldn't remember its meaning. Maybe if I see it enough times it will stick with me! Thanks for participating.
