Wondrous Words Wednesday - April 14, 2010

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Kathy aka Bermuda Onion where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. Feel free to join in the fun.

NEXT by James Hynes

micturates - In a men's room halfway down the concourse Kevin micturates, his nerves thrumming like wires. (p. 16)

micturates: to pass urine; urinate.

crepuscular - Seven months ago, in the crepuscular gloom of a Michigan November, leaving Ann Arbor had seemed like a pretty good idea. (p.33)

crepuscular: of, pertaining to, or resembling twilight; dim; indistinct.

ecdysiast - He has no idea where he's going -- his interview isn't until two -- but he can't resist following the lubricious vaudeville bump-bumpa-bump-bumpa-bump of Ms. Silk Suit's old-time ecdysiast strut, and when she stops short and laughts out loud, he nearly blunders into her from behind. (p.48)

ecdysiast: stripper

  1. What fun words this week! One guesses that Kevin goes out when it's crepuscular to see an ecdysiast and it makes him micturate!

  3. Love to see someone calling out crepuscular. One of my all-time favorite words.

  4. hm, he seems like a show-off. Those words (especially #1 and 3) are just unnecessary! Now I love a good 50-cent word but not at the expense of understanding.
