Wondrous Words Wednesday - February 9, 2011

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Kathy aka Bermuda Onion where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. Feel free to join in the fun.

PALE ROSE OF ENGLAND by Sandra Worth

compline - Church bells began to toll for compline, stirring a vague memory. (p.2)

compline: the last of the seven canonical hours, or the service for it, originally occurring after the evening meal but now usually following immediately upon vespers.

destrier - He mounted his stallion and sat for a long moment, looking at her. He turned his destrier. (p.42)

destrier: a war-horse; charger.

What new words did you discover this week?

  1. Those are both new to me too! Somehow I doubt I'll be able to ease them into a conversation today.

  2. I knew destrier. And I didn't know compline, but I imagine I may have seen it already somewhere (Pillars of the Earth comes to mind as a good title to feature this word...)
With words such as these two, it sounds like a book that would suit me! Thanks for sharing.

  3. These books with canonical hours mentioned drive me crazy because I can never get them straight! Even my husband, who had 18 years in Catholic schools can't though, so I feel better! :--)

  7. I love the way the words, sentences and the title of the book tells me about the flavor of the book. If I saw this at the library, I'd check it out. Sounds like my kind of book.

  9. Good words. I think I had guessed that destrier was a horse, but it's good to know that it's a war-horse.
