This is a little spin on Wondrous Words Wednesday, but I still think it fits -- well sort of. I can't actually take credit for this idea. It was presented by an editor at my husband's employer, but I thought it sounded like a lot of fun.
Each year the American Dialectic Society comes up with a "word of the year." Below are the winners from years past:
2010: app
2009: tweet
2008: bailout
2007: subprime
2006: plutoed
2005: truthiness
2004: red state/blue state
2003: metrosexual
2002: weapons of mass destruction
2001: 9-11 (most often styled 9/11)The American Dialectic Society won't announce their winner until early next year, but I thought we could come up with possibilities in the mean time. What word do you think should be the 2011 Word of the Year?
Oh gosh, great question. I'm going to have to think about this.
ReplyDeleteI love this! It's interesting that I use most of those words. I just looked plutoed up because I didn't know it's meaning and think it's a word I can use. I can't imagine what this year's word will be.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! Those words are perfect, too. I have no idea what would sum up this year in a single word, but I'm really looking forward to finding out what they choose.

I love this too - hadn't seen it before!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm ... that's a tough question. I'll be curious to see what everyone comes up with!
ReplyDeleteI just thought of something that might work for this year - tebowing!
ReplyDeleteWell this has been the year of the angry birds in our house, so something to do with that? (Or maybe our crazy congress.) :)
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea. I've heard of all those words but didn't know they were chosen as words of the year. Can't think of one for this year. Have a great day!

"pinterest" -- or am I the only one who is constantly throwing that into every situation? Oh, you like my food, I found it on pinterest. Yep, got that craft idea off pinterest. Planned a lesson from pinterest. etc.
ReplyDeleteThose selections are right on!! For the life of me, I can't imagine what this year's word would be ... but I bet when I see it, I will be like "Of course!!"
ReplyDeleteYou will let us know right?
